Joking is a Green Flag

A pair of Year 7 students from Mt Aspiring College wanted to show that joking is a positive part of friendships and is a ‘green flag’ rather than a red flag as toxic or negative behaviours can be.

Using a mnemonic to highlight the parts that make something joking (rather than teasing) the students broke down each part.

F- Feelings are not hurt (Joking is good natured, no one is targeted and emotions are positive)

L- Loads of Laughter because it is funny for everyone (if the person being joked about is not laughing…it’s not joking-even if you say JK)

A- Amigos/amigas/mates/friends- you like each other (joking happens within a positive relationship where you know the other person truly likes and cares about you)

G- Game Over! It stops when you ask. (If it doesn’t, it is not joking)
